Getting to Carnarvon Gorge

The good news for visitors to Carnarvon Gorge is that the road is now sealed all the way in. So you can now visit the gorge in any vehicle. It is also important to note that the road crosses Carnarvon Creek twice and is subject to flooding.

From Roma: Drive 90km north to Injune then a further 160km along the Carnarvon Highway to the Carnarvon Gorge turn-off. 

 

From Emerald: Drive 65km south to Springsure then 70km east to Rolleston, and a further 61km along the Carnarvon Highway to the Carnarvon Gorge turn-off.

From Rockhampton: Drive west on the Capricorn Highway for 110km (just to the west of Duaringa) then turning south onto the Fitzroy Developmental Rd / State Route 7 for 103km. Then turn back to the west from Bauhinia to Rolleston (77km) before turning south along the Carnarvon Highway for 61km, then turn right onto Wyseby Road and follow for 44km (via Obriens Rd) to Carnarvon Gorge.

Carnarvon Gorge experiences a temperate to sub-tropical climate, but it's crucial to plan around the seasons:

  1. Autumn (March to May):

    • Mild temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C.

    • Decreased rainfall and lower humidity provide comfortable hiking conditions, although we can still get some warm days. 

    • There is still relatively low visitation at this time of year, making May one of the ideal times of year to visit for many people. 

  2. Winter (June to August):

    • Cooler temperatures ranging from 0°C to 25°C.

    • Crisp, clear days make it an ideal time for hiking, with minimal rainfall.

    • This is the time of year with the highest visitation. 

  3. Spring (September to November):

    • Warmer temperatures, ranging from 10°C to 35°C.

    • Vibrant flora and blossoming wildflowers add color to the landscape.

  4. Summer (December to February):

    • Warm to hot temperatures, ranging from 20°C to 42°C.

    • Higher chances of rainfall, but the gorge transforms into a lush, green oasis.

    • There is much lower visitation in these months as storms are frequent and the days can get very hot.
